How Byron changes in The Watons go to Birmingham (teacher example of essay)

Byron is the older brother of Kenny, the narrator of The Watsons go to Birmingham. Byron is 13 and Kenny is 10, and Byron treats Kenny like a lot of older brothers treat their younger brothers — he picks on him. Byron can be nice, but even Kenny describes him as a "juvenile delinquent," and it is Byron's misbehavior that convinces his parents it's time for him to spend the summer with his grandmother, a very strict woman who lives in Alabama. It is from this trip that the book gets its name, and even though the Watsons aren't there for very long, Byron definitely changes for the better. After going to Birmingham, Byron is nicer to Kenny and more polite to his parents.
