#40 (teacher example)

The assignment: Read for two hours and use the following prompts to write five paragraphs, one for each prompt:

1. I really like/dislike this idea because...

The book I am reading is "The Skin I'm In." One main idea in the book is discrimination. I know this is a main idea because many of the events in the book involve characters discriminating against each other. For instance, students make fun of Maleeka, the main character, because she is darker than they are. Other students discriminate against Maleeka's teacher, Ms. Saunders, because an accident left her face disfigured. Char, Maleeka's "best friend," discriminates against Maleeka because she is poor and can't afford fancy or "cool" clothes. I like this main idea because I think the author, Sharon Flake, has written a book that accurately reflects the kinds of things that happen to students in middle school.

2. This character reminds me of somebody I know because...
3. This character is like (name of character) in (title of book) because...
4. I like/dislike this writing because....
5. This book makes me think about...

HW #31 (teacher example)

Q: Write about a song that reminds you of a time, place or person. Explain why it reminds you of that time, place or person.

A: A song that reminds of a certain time and place is "Buffalo Soldier," by Bob Marley. It specifically reminds me of when I was in Iraq in 2004 and Jassim, a man that I worked with, would always play a Bob Marley tape when we were in his car. One day we were trying to cross through a US army checkpoint but the soldiers didn't want to let us pass. But when they heard Bob Marley coming out of the speakers, they started to relax and joke around with us, and eventually they let us through. Every time I hear that song, it reminds me of Jassim and that day.
