Expository writing lesson #2: How do we decide if a source is reliable?

Download and read the second article for this unit.

Answer the following questions on the 2nd page: "Reader's Response" questions 1 and 3, and "Writer's response" questions 1-5.

When you have finished answering the questions, look at the sources you wrote down on your handout during lesson 1. Here are three things we can do to find out if the information from a source is reliable:

1. who published it? what can you find out about them or their company?
2. can you confirm the information from at least 2 other sources?
3. who is the author?
4. what does the website look like? who do you think its audience is? are there any visual clues to whether this seems like a reliable website?

Perform this checklist for each of your three sources, and decide whether each one is "reliable" or "unreliable." Write your decision on your handout.
